If you have been wondering how to start an online business as a mum, when your days already belong to everyone else, this is for you.

At the end of 2021 I rang my school and said I wasn’t coming back. My son needed me at home, and school hours weren’t coming back for me. It wasn’t a career decision. It was a life decision, and it was necessary. I’ve shared the full story here.

I’m a former teacher and now a medical and homeschool mum. I didn’t have a business plan when I left. What I had was years of teaching experience and not much time.

From home, I built an online education business and an email list of more than 3,000 teachers. Below are the steps I took, in the order I took them. None of them need you to have a different life first.

Why so many mums start in the wrong place

Most of us start online by opening an Instagram account and hoping people find us. I did have an Instagram page from the beginning. But Instagram wasn’t the foundation, and I think that is a big part of why things worked.

The foundation was a website, a freebie and an email list, built on something I already knew well. Instagram sat on top of that. Here is how it came together.

How to start an online business as a mum: the six steps I took

You will hear people say you need to “build authority online”. All that really means is that people trust you because you have actually done the thing.

I didn’t start a business in something new. I started with teaching, because I had done it for years. When I spoke about it, teachers listened, because they could tell I had stood where they were standing.

When you’re working out how to start an online business as a mum, your starting point is probably closer than you think. Write down the work you have done for years, the skills people already ask you for help with, and the problems you have solved in your own life. Your business usually starts somewhere on that list.

I started with three things at once: a website, a freebie and an Instagram page.

The website was the base. Instagram can bring people to you, but you don’t control who sees your posts from one week to the next. Your website and your email list belong to you, so that is where the business really lives.

You don’t need anything fancy to start an online business as a mum. A simple site with an about page (I highly recommend a Substack publication because it doubles as an email list as well), a few blog posts and a way to sign up for your freebie is enough to begin.

This is the step that set my business apart. I built my website around SEO keywords and wrote blog posts that answered what teachers were already typing into Google.

Because the site was written for search, Google picked it up. That meant strangers found me without me having to post every day.

To do this yourself, think about the questions your ideal person types into Google late at night. Each of those questions can become one blog post. Write the answer clearly, use the words she would use, and put the main phrase in your title and first paragraph.

If you only do one thing when you start an online business as a mum, collect emails. My freebie sat on my website from the start, so people joined my email list from the very beginning, not years later.

This matters more than follower numbers. An email list is a group of people who have put their hand up and said, “Yes, I want to hear from you.” It is how I grew to more than 3,000 subscribers, and it is the part of the business no algorithm can take away.

Your freebie doesn’t need to be big. It needs to solve one small, specific problem your person has right now.

Once the blog was live, I used Google Search Console to see what people were finding me for. That showed me which searches brought people to my site and why they were coming.

Then I created more content for those searches. I stopped guessing.

The same knowledge flowed into my Instagram. Because I knew what people wanted, my posts started to land, and when the page took off, I already had the website and freebie in place to collect emails. That is what turned attention into a list.

For a long time I was giving everything I knew away for free.

A business coach helped me see why. Sharing useful information is important, but it isn’t what helps someone take action. What moves people is seeing the gap between where they are now and where they want to be, and understanding that you can help them close it.

So instead of teaching everything at once, I learned to show people where they were, remind them where they wanted to be, and explain how I could help them get there. That is what authority looks like in practice. It isn’t about being the loudest voice. It is about being the person who can bridge the gap.

Fitting it around a full life

I homeschool my son first thing in the morning, and the business gets the hours after that. I don’t work from a long to-do list any more. I work from three non-negotiables.

Every day, I do at least one thing from each of these three buckets:

1. Looking after the people who already buy from me. Checking in with customers, replying to messages, sending samples, and small touches like birthday and Christmas gifts.

2. Reaching new people. Posting a reel or a feed post so someone new can find me.

3. Staying in touch with people who are getting to know me. Stories, my Facebook group, my email list or my Substack.

Once I have done one from each bucket, the rest of the day is a bonus. Whatever else I get to fills in around it. But I don’t get to the end of a day without having done all three, and that is what keeps the business moving when everything else is unpredictable.

This is the part most advice skips. If you are starting an online business as a mum, you probably won’t get long, quiet days to work. You will get windows. The six steps above work because each one can be done in small pieces, and each piece keeps working once it is done. A blog post you write today can still bring someone to your website next year.

Choose a business model that fits your life

Building my first business from scratch took everything I had. I created the website, the content, the freebie and the products myself.

When I started homeschooling, I couldn’t wait for “more time” any more, because it wasn’t coming. I needed something I could plug into and adapt around the life I actually had.

In 2024, a teacher friend asked me to partner with her in a skincare + wellness brand I had been using while I was still teaching. I wasn’t a skincare person. What appealed to me was the system: the products, the training and the structure already existed, so I didn’t have to invent them.With my first business, everything depended on me. I had to keep coming up with new offers, keep the website running and do every part of the business myself. With a brand partnership, the product development, the website and the shipping are already taken care of. My job is to share the products I use and look after the people who buy them.

There is no single right model. Some women build on their own expertise, the way I did first. Others prefer a brand partnership because the products and training are already there. The question to ask when you start an online business as a mum is which one fits the time and energy you have now.

Your first step this week

You don’t need to do all six steps at once. Start with step 1. Take ten minutes, write down what you already know, and circle the one thing people already come to you for. That is your starting point.

Knowing how to start an online business as a mum isn’t about finding more hours. It is about building in the right order, in the hours you already have.

I was eight to ten weeks along when my twelve-month-old came down with something. I caught it from him, the way mums catch everything. I had a low-grade fever and chills, spent a day resting, and then carried on looking after my toddler. There were no alarm bells and no hospital visit. The pregnancy felt like it was unfolding the way it should.

The virus was CMV. I had never heard of it, and it wasn’t mentioned at any of my pregnancy appointments. It is very common, young children often carry it, and most adults who catch it barely notice. I certainly didn’t.

Because of the CMV, we kept going back to have his hearing monitored. By nine months it had declined enough that he was fitted with hearing aids. He didn’t walk until twenty months, and despite all the speech therapy there was no babbling and there were no words. Again and again we were told he was difficult to test and that they couldn’t get a clear result. I had to push hard to get more testing done.

When he was two, the seizures started. We were living remotely, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service flew us out of our home town. He was diagnosed with epilepsy and started on anti-seizure medication. Over time we came to understand that the virus had affected his brain as well as his hearing.

Following that, he had a sedated ABR under general anaesthetic. An audiologist told me the result in a hospital corridor. He was profoundly deaf, and he was put on the waiting list for cochlear implants.

He received a cochlear implant on his left side, and two years later one on his right. There were countless mapping sessions and speech therapy appointments, and each time I hoped this would be the thing that moved him forward. The implants haven’t given him what we hoped for. So we leaned on the language we had started learning as a family, Auslan, and five years on we are still having lessons with Deaf mentors.

That is the thing about congenital CMV. It was never one diagnosis on one day. It revealed itself slowly, piece by piece, over years.

For a long time I blamed myself. I replayed that day in bed over and over, trying to find the moment where I should have known better. People told me it was just bad luck, which is hard to hear when you live with the consequences every day.

Counselling helped me understand more about that guilt I was experiencing. When an event happens in life without an explanation, the mind goes looking for a cause, and mothers almost always choose themselves. With what I knew then, there was nothing I could have done differently. It took me a long time to believe that.

I’ve made peace with this part of our story now. It still matters, but I understand it, and I have put down a responsibility that was never mine to carry.

What I didn’t see coming was what those years would do to the rest of my life, and to the driven teacher who thought she knew exactly where she was heading.

I was a dedicated teacher, and I had a plan. I wanted to mentor beginning teachers and then move into administration. I had already started writing curriculum, because what interested me most was how a lesson is structured and how to get the most out of what you deliver to students. I could see where my career was heading.

In 2021 my son was two. That was the year his seizures started, the Flying Doctors flew us out of our home town, and an audiologist told me in a hospital corridor that he was profoundly deaf. I've written about that part of our story here.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, I knew I couldn’t teach the following year.

I still remember the phone call to my deputy principal. The school already had plans in place for me, and they knew which class I would be taking. I told them I couldn’t do it. My son needed me, so at the end of 2021 I left the classroom.

The part I didn’t expect came later, once the appointments began to settle down. I was at home with my son, taking him to therapy and learning sign language, and all of it mattered. But I had always been career-driven, conscientious and high-achieving, and I was no longer learning or growing myself. I felt stuck in a rut, and I had lost my sense of who I was.

So I learnt content creation, social media marketing and copywriting, and I started sharing what I knew online. Over time, that became sharing my story, and it grew into Brolga Education, where I put what I knew about teaching to work in a new way. Then a skincare + wellness partnership came along, and with it a second business. Working out who I am online, across all of that, has been the hardest part.

These days I support my son through homeschool in the mornings, and I work on my business in the afternoons, at night and on weekends. I get to be creative and use my brain again, and I am building a business that will last.

The plan I had in 2021 is gone. What I understand now is that the ambition never left. The woman who wanted to mentor teachers and move into administration still wants to learn, grow and build. She is doing it somewhere she didn’t expect to be.

Multiple times in the last few months, I have found myself rewriting another bio.

Then I reconsidered my publication description, my audience, my content pillars and whether my link was sending people to the right place. Next minute I was analysing my pinned posts and considering how I could make them stronger. And one thing led to another until I began to confuse myself.

Every post gave me something else to analyse.

If it received views but no comments, I questioned the call to action. If it reached thousands of people but gained one follower, I questioned my positioning. If people followed but did not enquire, I questioned the offer.

There was always another adjustment I could make.

Because there was always something to optimise, I never felt finished.

I wasn’t running out of content ideas. I was running out of space to hear myself think.

I understand why I fell into this pattern.

More recently, my story-led reels have reached millions of non-followers and brought more than 1,200 new people into my audience.

Content works.

That made it easy to believe that if I could find the perfect combination of audience, hook, story, offer and call to action, everything would finally click into place.

So I kept refining.

I kept testing.

I kept looking at what the algorithm rewarded and trying to give it more.

But somewhere in that process, I stopped asking a much more important question:

What do I actually want to build?

Not what could attract the most views. Not what might grow the fastest. Not what another person thought I should sell or how I should market it. Not what the algorithm seemed willing to distribute that week.

What did I want my business and life to look like?

I had not given myself enough quiet time and space to answer that.

When the business stopped fitting around real life

I started building online because traditional work no longer fitted neatly around my family.

I am a former teacher, a medical mum and a homeschool mum. Our life includes appointments, therapies and a level of unpredictability that does not disappear because I have content to create.

The entire purpose of building online was to create more flexibility.

But recently, I noticed that while the business was physically happening around my life, mentally it was taking over it.

Life administration was being postponed. Housework was falling behind. Small tasks were piling up because I was hyper-focused on fixing the business.

Even when I was not creating content, I was thinking about what I needed to change next.

The business that was supposed to support my life was beginning to consume my attention.

That was when I knew I needed some time away from social media.

Not because I no longer believe in it. Not because I have stopped wanting to grow. And not because I am walking away from my business.

I needed enough distance to distinguish between purposeful work and compulsive optimisation.

Optimisation feels productive because you are always doing something. You are studying analytics, changing your messaging, refining your offer or researching what successful creators are doing.

But continual optimisation can also prevent you from committing long enough to discover whether anything works.

Every disappointing result creates another pivot. Every successful creator presents another model to follow. Every new idea becomes a possible solution.

Eventually, you are no longer building from a clear direction. You are reacting to whatever happened most recently.

I do not think the algorithm created this problem. It simply gave my hyper-fixation somewhere to go.

What I am changing

I still want to build.

I enjoy creating content, experimenting with ideas and understanding why one message connects while another falls flat.

I still want customers, income, impact and growth.

The answer is not to stop caring about results. It is to stop allowing every result to redirect the business.

For now, I am choosing a simpler publishing rhythm: one written article and one Pivot to Impact voice note each week.

I am also learning to record what the data tells me without rebuilding everything around it. A poorly performing post does not automatically mean my direction is wrong. A reel receiving views without enquiries does not require an immediate identity crisis.

Most importantly, I am deciding what I want before asking the algorithm what it wants.

The algorithm may help me distribute an idea. It cannot decide which business I should build, what matters to my family or what I am willing to sacrifice.

Those decisions have to come from me.

Household tasks, homeschooling, appointments, rest and looking after myself are not interruptions preventing me from building. They are the life the business was created to support.

I do not want to build a successful business at the expense of the woman building it.

And I do not want to become so responsive to an algorithm that I lose the ability to listen to myself.

So, for now, I am allowing some things to remain unoptimised.

I am creating enough space to decide what deserves my attention before automatically giving it away.

Because the goal was never to build a business that took over my life.

The goal was to build one that could genuinely fit inside it.

A low-grade fever I barely noticed in my first trimester eventually changed almost every part of my life.

At the time, I had no idea I had contracted CMV, cytomegalovirus, or that it had passed to my baby before he was born.

My son was born hearing. By two, he was profoundly deaf.

What followed were cochlear implants, therapy, learning Auslan, appointments, language support and eventually seizures. We later learnt that the same virus that had damaged his hearing had also affected his brain.

For a long time, I thought about those changes mainly in terms of what they meant for my son.

It took me longer to understand how much they would also change the kind of working life I could realistically have.

I had trained for a teaching career I loved

Before all of this, I had a fairly clear idea of where my career was going.

I had trained as a teacher, worked hard to develop my skills and genuinely loved education. I was particularly interested in curriculum and could see myself eventually specialising more deeply in that area.

I did not leave teaching because I suddenly stopped caring about the work.

The problem was that full-time classroom teaching stopped fitting neatly around the reality of our family life.

Appointments did not conveniently fall outside school hours. Therapy needed to happen when it needed to happen. Medical needs could not always be predicted in advance. There were school calls, fatigue, seizures and the days when my son simply needed me to be available.

Eventually, mainstream schooling stopped working well for him and I brought him home to homeschool.

At that point, one thing became very clear: I could no longer build my working life on the assumption that I could drop my child at school each morning, go to work and know exactly how the next eight hours would unfold.

I needed another option.

The problem was not that I did not want to work

I think this distinction matters because special needs mums are often spoken about as though caring and working sit on opposite sides of a decision.

That was never how it felt to me.

I still wanted to work. I still wanted to contribute financially. I still wanted to learn, build skills and have goals outside the day-to-day demands of caregiving.

But the type of work had to change.

I did not need someone to tell me to become better organised so that I could squeeze our family into the structure of a traditional job.

I needed work that could fit around my son.

There is a difference.

And that became the question I started asking:

What could I build that would allow me to earn around my son’s needs, rather than constantly asking our family to fit around work?

That question eventually led me online.

“Work from home” and “flexible work” are not always the same thing

When you first start looking for work-from-home options as a parent, it can sound as though remote work will automatically solve the problem.

It does not always.

A job can technically be done from home and still require you to be online from 9am until 5pm. A role can be labelled “flexible” while still expecting you to be available for meetings at fixed times or meet deadlines that do not care whether your child has suddenly needed you for three days.

In Australia, flexible working arrangements can include changes to hours, work patterns and location, and eligible carers can request them from an employer.

There are also genuinely flexible remote and part-time roles available. Current Australian job listings include work-from-home and flexible roles across a range of industries.

But for me, I realised I was looking for something slightly different.

I was not simply looking for a job I could do from my house.

I was looking for a way of earning that could move with the unpredictability of our life.

What I actually needed from flexible work

Once I stopped asking, “What job should I get?” and started asking, “What does our family actually need?”, my criteria became much clearer.

I needed to be able to work from home.

I needed to be able to build in pockets of time rather than relying on uninterrupted eight-hour days.

I needed something I could put down when my son needed me and come back to later.

I needed the freedom to work around homeschooling, therapy and appointments.

And importantly, I wanted something with room to grow.

I was not looking for an activity to fill my spare time.

I wanted the possibility of meaningful income.

That mattered to me because flexibility and financial contribution were not competing goals. I wanted both.

The online options I started looking at

There are many ways to earn online, and I do not think there is one perfect model for every special needs parent.

Freelancing can give you flexibility, particularly if you already have a skill such as writing, administration, design or consulting. There are also remote employment opportunities that offer genuinely flexible or part-time arrangements. Current parent-focused job sites explicitly position themselves around work that can fit around school pickup and caregiving responsibilities.

Digital products and online education can also create income, although they require time to develop, market and sell.

Content creation can open doors to brand partnerships, affiliate income or other opportunities, but an audience does not automatically become an income stream.

And then there is social selling, which is the path I eventually decided to build alongside my own content and personal brand.

None of these options is effortless.

The important question is not:

“Which one is easiest?”

It is:

“Which model genuinely fits the life I need to build it around?”

Why social selling became part of my answer

The model I chose allows me to partner with an established skincare and wellness company rather than creating a product from scratch.

I can build from home.

I can create content in the pockets of time available to me.

I can have customer conversations when I have capacity.

I can continue learning skills in storytelling, social media, personal branding and marketing that interest me anyway.

And if my son needs me, I can step away.

That does not mean the business builds itself while I am gone. It still requires work.

But there is a very big difference between work requiring effort and work requiring me to be physically present in a classroom at 8:30am regardless of what is happening at home.

That difference matters in our family.

I also found something I had not realised I was missing

When life becomes heavily centred around therapy, medical appointments, education and caregiving, your world can become very small without you necessarily noticing it happening.

Building online gave me another space.

I met women outside the medical and disability world.

I learnt new skills.

I started understanding social media, storytelling and marketing in a completely different way.

I had conversations that had nothing to do with the next appointment.

And I began building something that could coexist with being the mum my son needed me to be.

That has been important to me in ways that go beyond money.

What I would tell another special needs mum looking for flexible income

If you have found this article because you are searching for work-from-home options as a special needs parent, I would not start by choosing a business model.

I would start by getting very clear about the life it needs to fit into.

Ask yourself:

How unpredictable are my weeks?

If appointments move regularly or your child’s health can change quickly, a job requiring fixed availability may still be difficult even if it is remote.

Do I need to be able to stop working without asking someone’s permission?

That was an important one for me.

How much uninterrupted time do I realistically have?

There is no point building a plan that requires three uninterrupted hours every morning if your real life gives you twenty minutes here, forty minutes there and the occasional longer block.

Do I want employment, self-employment or a business?

They solve different problems and carry different levels of responsibility.

What am I willing to learn?

Anything you build online will involve learning something. That might be technology, marketing, sales, writing, content, customer service or building relationships.

Does this option still work during a difficult week?

This may be the most important question of all.

I do not build around my best week.

I have to build around real life.

I stopped trying to recreate my old working life

For a long time, I think part of me was still trying to solve a new problem with the plan I had made before my life changed.

I had worked hard for my teaching career. I knew where I wanted it to go. Walking away from the traditional version of that path was not as simple as deciding I wanted something different.

But eventually I realised I did not need to recreate the life I had planned.

I needed to build one that worked now.

My son needed me available in ways I could never have predicted when I first trained to teach.

That is our reality.

But being available for him does not mean I have to give up earning, learning or building.

It means the way I do those things has to fit around the life we actually live.

If traditional work no longer fits around your child’s needs

Maybe you are reading this between therapy appointments.

Maybe you have had another call from school.

Maybe you are homeschooling because mainstream education stopped working for your child.
