If you are serious about building your personal brand, the biggest gap I see right now is that people are not optimising their pinned posts.
I have had so many conversations with clients this week about storytelling content and how to get started. And the number one thing I have said to every single one of them is this: start with your pinned posts.
When someone comes through to your profile, they form an opinion about you immediately. You have seconds to capture their attention. And if your pinned posts are random product photos or motivational quotes that could belong to anyone, you have already lost them.
A strategically crafted pinned post that explains who you are, what you do, why you do it, and how you got here — that is the foundation of building your personal brand, and it starts building trust before you have ever had a conversation.
And the most powerful pinned post you can have? Your brand story.
What Is a Brand Story and Why It Matters for Building Your Personal Brand
Let me be clear about what a brand story is not.
It is not a vulnerable share for the sake of being vulnerable. It is not about being relatable. And it is not your entire life story.
Your brand story is the moment — the experience — that shaped your perspective on what you do now. It is an event that happened to you that taught you something, and that lesson now influences why you help people with a particular problem.
It connects your followers to the bigger picture of your personal brand: your mission, your vision, and where you are going.
It is not just telling people “this is my mission.” It is taking them on a journey:
This is where I was.
This is what happened to me.
This is what I learned.
This is why I now do what I do.
Why Your Brand Story Sets You Up as a Leader
When you are building your personal brand, people need to understand you quickly. If they do not, they scroll past. They forget about you. They do not follow.
When your story is clear, your content makes sense. Your audience connects to your experiences and your perspective. They understand the bigger picture of where you are going — and they want to be part of it.
A strong brand story also sets you up as a leader. It shows your audience: this is where I was, I was struggling, I got through it, I overcame it, and now this is what I do. That is leadership. That is authority. And that is what builds a personal brand that people trust.
When I shared my own brand story — how I got here, why I started sharing on social media, and why I moved into personal branding and storytelling — it became my highest-performing carousel in terms of profile activity. That single post generated 28 profile visits.
I did not originally write it as a pinned post. But the response was so strong that I pinned it as the number one carousel on my profile. It is now the first thing people read about me, because it clearly explains who I am, why I do what I do, and why I am committed to it.
Brand stories have a profound effect on people. And yours will too.
How to Craft Your Brand Story: A Step-by-Step Framework
I created a brand story framework for my coaching clients this week because I have found that most creators struggle to structure their story into something digestible. They know their story matters, but they do not know how to shape it into a post that actually lands.
So I built a simple Canva carousel template that walks you through it step by step. It is not overly designed — it is focused entirely on the messaging of your brand story.
Here is how to use it:
1. Focus on the key shift. Identify the one moment or experience that led to a change — the thing that inspired you to start your business, your profile, or your journey on social media. Make sure it is relevant to what you offer, who you help, and the personal brand you are building.
2. Be specific, not vague. This is critical. If you put a generic prompt into ChatGPT, you will get a vague, generic story. You need to drill down into specificity. Talk about the actual things you were doing on a day-to-day basis that made it difficult. The actual thoughts. The actual behaviours. The actual events — and what you remember about them. The more specific you get, the more powerful your story becomes.
3. Make it yours. Go into the template and customise it. Add photos of yourself. Change it to your brand colours. Fill in the prompts with your real story, in your real voice.
4. Post it and pin it. Once it is done, post it and pin it to the top of your profile. This is now the first thing people see when they find you — and it immediately starts building your personal brand through familiarity and trust.
